The Tipperary International Peace Award has been presented to former President Mary Robinson today.

The chair of The Elders and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights received the award in recognition of her efforts to ensure that the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable are addressed internationally; to acknowledge her role as an advocate for gender equality, and for her outspokenness when it comes to the issue of climate change.

The award ceremony took place at the Excel Centre in Tipperary town.

Accepting the award, Mrs Robinson spoke of the obstacles that continue to be encountered by women across the world, and how she dealt with similar issues in the course of her humanitarian work.

Mrs Robinson was also due to attend a Peace Forum with a range of other informed speakers.

The topic under discussion was ‘Peace and Climate Justice’.
