The US Secretary of State John Kerry has been revealed as the recipient of the Tipperary International Peace Award.

Making the announcement this morning, the Honorary Secretary of the Tipperary Peace Convention, Martin Quinn, said that the award is being given to Mr. Kerry in recognition of his work on a number fronts.  These include his contribution towards negotiating the agreement that led to the destruction of Syria’s declared chemical weapons and for reaching an agreement with Iran to ensure that its nuclear programme is exclusively peaceful.  He was also the first sitting US Secretary of State to visit Hiroshima, more than 70 years after the city was devastated by the world’s first atomic bombing.

The award will be presented to Secretary Kerry at a date to be announced later this year.
