The Army bomb disposal team, understood to be based in Cork, are on their way to a site on Tillery Road between Monard and Cappawhite.

Contractors working on a project for Tipperary County Council have uncovered a hand grenade close to the site of the Sologhead monument that marks events at the beginning of the War of Independence.

The discovery was made shortly after 9am on Friday morning, leading to the evacuation of the site by the contractor’s personnel.

The device did not explode and no injuries were suffered. Gardaí are currently on site awaiting the arrival of the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team as the site remains cordoned off to all but the army specialists.

Ten staff from English Tarmac Ltd were on site at the time of the incident.

Work at the junction was underway to alleviate flooding. The staff have left the site and the junction leading towards Cappawhite may remain closed until Monday given the incomplete roadworks and investigations to be completed by the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.
