TD Mattie McGrath Strongly Criticised A Proposal To Introduce Public Holiday On The Twelfth Of July

The Leader of the Rural Independent Group of TDs, Mattie McGrath, has strongly criticized a proposal put forward by Green Party TD Patrick Costello to introduce a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland on the twelfth of July. Deputy McGrath described the idea as offensive and ludicrous, stating that it showcases the Green Party’s detachment from reality.

Deputy Costello put forward the proposal on the basis that the Irish Constitution says Ireland will work to unite all the people of the island in all the diversity of their traditions.  Deputy Costello says the 12 of July and March 17 are public holidays in the 6 counties and wants to see the same in the Republic.

Deputy Mattie McGrath says that for most Catholics living in the north, the twelfth of July remains a sectarian event that instils fear and danger. The Tipperary TD is also against the introduction of another public holiday in principle due to the costs it would place on business operators.
