Dog Owners Urged To Keep Their Pet Under Control Amid Lamb Season

301

Tipperary Garda are appealing to dog owners to keep their dogs under control as lambing season has begun.

Each year over 200 instances of livestock worrying are reported to the local authorities.

Under the Control of Dogs Act, a dog owner or other person in control of the dog is liable to prosecution if the dog is found to have worried sheep.

The animals can be injured by trying to escape from a dog or so stressed that they do not thrive and continue to deliver their lambs.

There have been several incidents of sheep being killed by dogs in recent weeks and the government has set up a interdepartmental working party to try to update the legislation in respect of Dog Ownership and Control which is due to make recommendations shortly.
