Deputy Michael Lowry has said that Irish water’s request for a reduction in the free water allowance for children is further evidence of what he says is the “contempt” in which it holds the Irish people.

The Independent TD for Tipperary was speaking after a meeting with the Oireachtas Committee was told that Irish Water is demanding a reduction in the 38,000-litre allowance of free water that had been promised to each child of the state.

He went on to point out that almost 40,000 children throughout County Tipperary will be eligible for this vital allocation.

He is calling on the Government and Minister for the Environment to secure Child Free Allowance under legislation to ensure that Irish Water cannot, in his words “hold its customers to ransom” in such a way in the future.
