Data from the Central Statistics Office shows there was an annual increase of 19% in the total number of planning permissions approved for new homes in Tipperary in 2023, 914 homes in 2023 compared to 769 in 2022.

Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien, says the figures indicate that the pipeline for much needed homes in Tipperary and nationally is continuing to strengthen. All our other key housing indicators continued on a positive trajectory.

2023 also recorded the highest number of annual commencements nationally on record, up 21.5% compared to 2022.  Completions last year were the highest in 15 years, with 32,695 new homes completed exceeding Housing for All’s annual target of 29,000 by almost 13%.” Government officials accept that annual delivery of 50,000 new homes is required to  address the current housing crisis where there were 13,351 people  in homeless accommodation as of the end of January 2024..

In county Tipperary the social housing list had 3,383 approved applicants as of the end of 2023 many are currently supported though a state payment to secure private rented accommodation.

The Department of Housing subtracts such applicants from the overall housing list when setting construction/purchase targets for Tipperary County Council as it considers their housing needs are met.

Minister O’Brien says that in line with Housing for All, priorities to achieve compact and sustainable growth and revitalize urban centres, there is a strong focus on  multi  house developments and  such projects report  a 40% increase in 2023 compared to 2022.
