Funding to continue work on the N24 Road Cahir to Limerick Junction upgrade including the Tipperary town By Pass was announced today. The Road is one of 21 projects to receive a funding allocation along with the Adare By Pass, the N/M20 Cork to Limerick and the N25 Midleton to Youghal (Castlemartyr and Killeagh Bypasses).

It is expected that the design team working on the N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction project, 37km in distance (which actually extends to Knockballyfookeen, West of Brooks Bridge) will submit a planning application in 2025.

A total of €517M was allocated today with €412 in respect of major national roads projects, €33M  for national road maintenance and  €72M for 70 greenway projects.

The €412 million is for the progression of a number of new road projects which are currently under construction or in early stages of the development process. The Department of Transport says the 2024 funding allocations are made with regard to the National Development Plan 2021-2030 (NDP), which balances investment in transport against other priorities of the Government on housing and health over the lifetime of the Plan.

As part of the NDP, the Government has also earmarked €5.1 billion for spending on new national roads projects until 2030. It is expected that approximately 65km of Greenways will be delivered in 2024 with planning decisions expected on a further 35km of Greenway. The allocations will also be used to begin delivery of the National Cycle Network (published in January 2024), which identifies 3,500 km of cycling corridors around the country linking cities and towns of over 5,000 people.
