Cllr Moloney Calls For Ash Dieback Awareness Campaign

Cllr Andy Moloney is requesting that Tipperary County Council’s Environmental section act to raise awareness about ash dieback across the county.

He claimed that during the recent spell of poor weather a lot of ash limbs were visible on the margins of the roadside as many of the existing ash trees were dead or dying.

Ash dieback was first detected in the Republic of Ireland in October 2012 on plants imported from continental Europe. The disease is now prevalent throughout most of the island of Ireland and is likely to cause the death of the majority of the ash trees over the next two decades.

Tipperary Council accepted a proposal from Cllr Moloney that a media and communications campaign be arranged to advise landowners and general public to carry out a health-check on trees on their property.

Councillor Moloney says for proactive safety reasons, trees that are dead or dying need to be removed before the winter especially from roadside locations.
