Construction works have now commenced on two wastewater treatment plants in Tipperary. The facilities are located in Ballina and Newport and the combined cost is estimated at €19M.  The new treatment plants will eliminate the discharge of poorly treated wastewater into the receiving waters of Lough Derg resulting in improved water quality. The two projects combined will serve a population equivalent of 11,600 and will accommodate future population growth of the surrounding areas.

In addition to the upgrade of the two treatment plants new pumping stations, storm water management systems, settlement tanks, and the rationalisation of the number of discharge points is also included.

Works on both upgrade projects are due to be substantially complete by the end of 2024 with Ward and Burke carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
