The Dáil has heard a call from Deputy Jackie Cahill for wraparound services for Thurles in advance of the settlement of 60 Ukrainian families into the town.

Deputy Cahill says the town will need extra GP services and DEIS status for the local schools, prior to the arrival of refugees, in order to avoid additional pressures on the system locally.

The Government has announced plans for 60 modular homes to be constructed in Gortataggart to house refugees.

At present only one of the town’s 8 primary and secondary schools has DEIS status.

A community centre for Ukrainian Refugees has been established in the Community services building beside the courthouse on O’Donovan Rossa Street.

This has been used by  refugees located in Templemore, Littleton Fethard and surrounding areas.
