Today marks the 100th anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the foundation committee that led to the creation of An Garda Síochána.

Called by Michael Collins, the meeting took place at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin and among the attendees was Michael Staines TD who would go on to become the first Garda Commissioner.

An Garda Siochana  will hold a number of local and national commemorative events throughout 2022.

These will coincide with the key historical dates with one of the first events taking place on February 21st  to mark the day the first Garda recruits were enrolled in the RDS.

An event on May 24th, 2022 will commemorate the meeting at the Gresham hotel.

On August 27th August there will be a National Event to commemorate the day that Commissioner Michael Staines led Gardaí into Dublin Castle and all serving and retired Garda members are to be presented with a special Centenary Service Medal.

89 members of An Garda Siochana have died in the line of Duty and Commissioner Harris says their brave and courageous efforts will be a core part of this year’s commemorations
