Independent TD Mattie McGrath has said that it is now almost impossible to concieve how any member of the Dail Technical Group can participate in the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry without doing serious damage to the credibility of the status of Independent TDs. Deputy McGrath was speaking as controversy how the compusition of the inquiry committee and its terms of reference will be constituted continues.
Over the weekend, Independent TD Stephen Donnelly resigned over the Taoiseach’s determination to secure a government majority on the committee by appointing two extra members to it.
Commenting, Deputy McGrath described the Taoiseach’s actions as “autocratic” and accused him of seeking a pervesion of Oireachtas procedures to suit his political ends.
Concluding he said that the inquiry should be taken out of the political realm, but that it is clear at this point that a non-politicised model is unlikely to emerge.
