Sinn Féin local election candidate for the Newport Local Electoral Area Gavin Ryan launched his election campaign over the weekend.

Gavin Ryan from Newport is a secondary school teacher of History/Geography and Special Needs.

The 28-year-old says he is driven by a profound commitment to building a fair and just community for all.

Priorities issues include housing, improving the quality of roads, representing and developing community and youth-based facilities, tackling the healthcare crisis and reducing the necessity for young people to emigrate especially due to the housing crisis.

Solutions to the housing crisis proposed are increases in social and affordable housing initiatives and reform of the planning process.

Transport services for rural areas and actions to support Ireland’s cultural heritage and environment are also areas of interest to Gavin Ryan.

Sinn Fein Senator Paul Gavan and sitting TDs Maurice Quinlivan and Martin Browne attended the launch event.

The local elections are likely to be held on June 7th.

Newport LEA elects 4 councillors and last week sitting Newport Cllr John Rocky McGrath(Team Lowry) announced  that he would not be contesting the 2024 election.

The other sitting councillors are Fiona Bonfield(Labour), Phyll Bugler(FG) and John Carroll(FF).
