Appeal For Information Into Fatal Collision Near Cashel

Three lives were lost in a car collision near Cashel last night.

It is understood that three generations of a local family were travelling in the vehicle.

The car hit a wall near the Windmill Knockbulloge area – the vehicle had exited the M8 northbound lane a short time earlier.

The incident occurred shortly before nine pm and prompted a major response from emergency services.

The adult male and adult female rear seat passengers, both aged in their 40s, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Their bodies have been removed to University Hospital Waterford where a post mortem will take place in due course.

A three-year-old infant boy was also fatally injured during the collision; the body of the infant boy has been taken to Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel.

It is understood that the deceased adults were the child’s grandparents.

The male and female, front seat occupants of the car, aged in their 20s have been taken to Tipperary University Hospital where they continue to be treated for serious injuries.

The road in Windmill Knockbulloge is currently closed to traffic with local diversions in place and is not expected to reopen for some time.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI) are attending the scene this morning to conduct an examination.

An incident room has been established at Cahir Garda Station and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact the investigation team.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Windmill Knockbulloge area near Cashel between 8.30pm and 9.15pm yesterday evening are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

The deaths bring to seven the number of road collision fatalities in the county since Friday when four people died in a single vehicle collision in Clonmel.

Tipperary TD Michael Lowry describes an enormous sense of shock in the Cashel area following confirmation of a fatal car crash.

Deputy Lowry noted that Gardaí are in the process of informing families and loved ones of the incident and says his thoughts and prayers are with them as they receive this devastating news.
