Extra Water Supply Disruption Possible Amid Strike Action

363

Additional disruption to water supplies are possible due to planned industrial action by members of the Unite trade union on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th August.

This action will involve water services employees in Tipperary County Council and consist of the withdrawal of their labour for these three days. The industrial action relates to the ongoing transformation of water services to Uisce Éireann and the worker’s employment conditions if they choose to remain with Tipperary County Council or transfer to become direct employees of Uisce Eireann.

Tipperary County Council is warning of possible water outages or reduction in supplies. Three precautionary Boil Water Notices were put in place on the Crotty’s Lake water supply scheme in Carrick-on-Suir and on the Glenary and Poulavanogue water supply schemes in Clonmel.   The council is also considering whether water tankers are needed to ensure supplies for customers due to the three-day stoppage.

It is anticipated that the areas most likely to be affected by this industrial action are supplied by the Galtee, Ardfinnan, Dundrum, Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir Water Supply Schemes. It is not expected that wastewater treatment will be impacted by the industrial action.

There are also four boil water notices in place due to issues not relating to the planned industrial action – these notices are on the Ardfinnan, Ballylooby/Burncourt, Galtee Regional and Thurles Public water schemes. Heavy rainfall impacts the quality of the raw water and this can interfere with the water disinfection process at the Water Treatment Plants.

Full details on the areas impacted by the precautionary Boil Water Notices are on www.water.ie and updates as they occur  will be on the Council’s website, www.tipperarycoco.ie.
