The Department of Housing reports that the number of people in Emergency Accommodation for the month of June is 12,600 people. This is an increase of 159 people compared to May 2023.

In County Tipperary there is a slight improvement –  45 people are reported in Emergency Accommodation down from 51 persons in May. County Limerick reports an increase of 8 persons to now having 344 people in Emergency Accommodation.

The Department says that while there are many complex reasons for people presenting as homeless the two most common reasons over the three months between April – June are receiving Notice to Quit from a landlord (28.8%) and relationship breakdown/family circumstances (28.2%).

The Monthly Homeless Report for June 2023 shows that nationally there were 5,880 single adults and 1,804 families accessing emergency accommodation in the month, including 3,765 children (under-18).

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien says “Unfortunately we have seen an increase in the numbers of people in emergency accommodation. The situation is very challenging but the Government, local authorities and those in the voluntary sectors are working together and making every effort to reduce homelessness. Tackling this issue is a Government priority.”

The total of 12, 600 refers to people in Emergency Accommodation and does not include people sleeping rough or living in overcrowded situations.
