Rural Independent TD Grouping Call For Debate On Immigration Policy

The Rural Independent TD Grouping is calling for a Dáil Debate on Ireland’s immigration policy.

The group says the pace of immigration into Ireland is causing a strain on services such as healthcare and housing and needs to be reviewed.

The group led by Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath claim the housing crisis and its intersection with immigration has become the biggest issue facing Ireland.

Tipperary County Council recently clarified that no social housing or financial support such as HAP or RAS are available to Ukrainian Refugees or Asylum seekers.

Deputy McGrath  also claims that the Government is acting to restrict public discussion by proposing hate speech legislation.

Ireland is currently hosting approximately 77,000 refugees from Ukraine but has also seen an increase in the numbers arriving from Somalia, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Georgia with an estimated 5,074 people claiming asylum on arrival but arriving without documentation.

The Government announced plans last week to speed up the processing of such applications and to act on deportation orders issued if the application is refused.
