An estimated 11,000 people attended a protest in Limerick on Saturday in respect of overcrowding at the ED in UHL.

The crowd gathered outside City Hall and observed a minute’s silence in solidarity with all patients affected by overcrowding at hospitals.

UHL had a record 126 patients experiencing delayed admission on one day in 2022.

The march through the city centre ended at Arthur’s Quay where a rally was held.

A minute’s silence was also observed to remember Aoife Johnston, aged 16 who died in UHL on Dec 19th due to meningitis – her sister attended the event.

Speakers from Tipperary, Clare and Limerick called for expanded services at the hospitals in Ennis, St John’s and Nenagh to improve patient care.

Public representatives were asked to come out publicly in favour of the expanded services – present at the event were TDs Micheal Lowry, Michael McNamara, Martin Brown, Maurice Quinlivan, Richard O’Donoghue, Senator Timmy Dooley and Clllr Seamie Morris.
