Increase Of Influenza In The Mid-West Region

The Department of Public Health Mid-West would like to make the public aware of an increasing incidence of influenza in the Mid-West region in recent weeks. There have been 101 flu cases in the Mid-West since the start of October, and 14 new cases in the week ending Nov 26th. Public Health Mid West says this figure represents only a small fraction of what is actually present in the community. It is also expected that rates may rise more quickly in the coming weeks due to socialising in the Christmas season.

Health officials say the flu season has started earlier and  are concerned about the combined impact of COVID-19, influenza, RSV and other respiratory viruses.  The need for care will likely impact hospitals and GPs  with increased attendances from patients who are ill. The public are advised to avail of the flu vaccine which is provided free of charge to those 50 and older, those aged less than 50 that are at higher risk due to influenza, those aged 2 – 17 year olds are offered a free nasal flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is also provided free of charge to health care workers, those who are pregnant and those who are in regular contact with pigs, poultry or waterfowl.
