Councillors voted 5 to 2 in favour of proposed plans to develop plaza in Tipperary town

Tipperary/Cashel Municipal District councillors have voted by 5 to 2 in favour of proposed plans to develop a plaza in the centre of Tipperary town.

The plaza would see a public space developed in the area of the Kickham statue at the top of Kickham St and a corresponding one-way system would be directed down Kickham St.

Funding in the region of €40,000 is being provided by the EU, but the overall project would cost somewhere in the region of €200,000.

Despite the majority of councillors voting in favour of the system, there is still a split in attitudes towards it, with some saying that it will be good for the town, while others say the majority of traders in the immediate area are opposed to it.

Cllr Michael Fitzgerald believes the offer is too good to pass up and is not dependent upon having a by-pass.

Cllr Denis Leahy however, says the plans are too vague, lack detail and pose traffic problems…
