South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath has called for a no vote in the upcoming referendum on the establishment of a new Court of Appeal.

Deputy McGrath has questioned the necessity to have such a vote at all by referring to a lecturer at NUI Maynooth who said that it is not clear why the taxpayer should pay for a new court given that the Minister gor Justice has made no progress in reducing the four year backlog in the supreme court

Deputy McGrath said that the proposal tio establish a new Court of Appeal is nothing more than “tinkering around the edges” when real reform is needed.

The government is including the proposal for a new court of appeal in the upcoming referendum to deal with the backlog in cases at the Supreme Court
