Tipperary TD Michael Lowry is calling for continued investment in sports in Ireland.

The comments come as the Dáil addressed Government Capital Support for Sports Facilities in which Deputy Lowry indicated that a number of applications from the new North Tipperary constituency are with the Department of Sport for approval.

The TD notes the importance of sporting facilities and supports from local grassroots to international competition where he says Irish sports stars earn the support of the nation and also help to promote Ireland abroad.

The overall budget for sport in 2024 stands at €183.337M, which includes €2M in additional funding for Women’s Sport.

Deputy Lowry says this level of state investment provides a positive return and yield for the country.

The benefits range from positive impacts on physical and mental health, developing a sense of discipline and team-work, and benefits for the local economy when a sporting event takes place through to the larger spin off when Ireland hosts an international sporting event.
