Roscrea based Councillor Shane Lee is seeking a meeting with the Minister for Justice regarding Garda numbers in the town. The councillor’s car was stolen last weekend and later involved in an incident that resulted in two Gardaí being hospitalised for treatment for non-life threatening injuries. Garda have arrested a man in connection with the incident. The Councillor says the numbers of Gardaí rostered for the town are just not adequate and also wants the Minister for Integration Roderick O’Gorman to attend to get an update on the situation in the town at present involving a huge increase in population due to the provision of refugee accommodation.

The call comes as Garda Superintendent Kieran Ruane confirms that Cashel Garda Station is only open for 9 hours per week. The Superintendent, with responsibly for the South Tipperary Community Engagement area says the station will be open between 1pm and 4pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week.  Superintendent Ruane hopes to deliver consistent opening hours each week but confirms that the opening hours for the following week will be posted outside the station in Hogan Square. The stations in Cahir and Clonmel are open 24 hours every day. An intercom device is available at the entrance to Cashel Garda Station that connects to Cahir Garda Station. An Garda Síochána ongoing policy and information to the public remains that reports of crimes in progress, an emergency situation, should be reported to An Garda Síochána through the 999/112 emergency call handling system.
