Council To Trial New Roadside Vacuum System To Collect Litter

Tipperary County Council is to trial a new roadside vacuum system to collect litter from hedgerows especially on approach roads into towns.

The project is being funded by the Department of the Environment as part of an anti litter/ illegal dumping campaign.

The new device is to be used by a contractor in the Tipperary Cahir Cashel district in the coming weeks.

Depending on results funding may be allocated within the Council budget for the service in future years.

Council engineers say the Summer months may not be the best time to undertake the trial but as the funding must be used in the next  6 – 8 weeks there is no alternative.

Cllr Andy Moloney questioned the value for money of the project and suggested funding may be better spent on education and awareness campaigns and raised issues about Road Safety.

The Councillor was informed that the contractor was responsible for all health and safety issues when working on public roads.
