Tributes Paid To Former Clonmel Mayor Carrie Acheson

Fianna Fail leader and Tanaiste Michael Martin is leading tributes to former South Tipperary TD who passed away.

Carrie Acheson became involved in public life in Clonmel and was elected to South Tipperary County Council in 1974 and also served as Mayor of Clonmel.

Tipperary Fianna Fail says Carrie was born into a very Republican family, her father, Matt Barlow, was an important figure in the 3rd Tipperary Brigade Old IRA. She

She was elected to the 22nd Dáil in 1981 for South Tipperary and served until the February 1982 election.

Carrie was the 2nd ever female elected to Dáil Éireann representing either North or South Tipperary.

Her sister, Tras Honan, was also a Senator & the 1st female Cathaoirleach of the Seanad and they were the first sisters elected to the Oireachtas.
