Templemore Community Concerned About Lack Of Progress On Access To Garda Swimming Pool

The community in Templemore is concerned at the lack of progress to secure access to the swimming pool at the Garda College in the town.

A high profile campaign secured assurances that the pool would reopen by the end of November and community access would be restored.

The We Just Want to Swim Group met with An Taoiseach Micheal Martin and secured a commitment that access would be restored.

The Group says an application for a licence has not been approved and that the Garda college are avoiding calls and emails in respect of arranging access since the announcement on November 9th

At that time, the Garda Press office confirmed that as there will be an increase in the number of recruits in the Garda College from late November that the Garda College pool will be available to local community groups from that time on.”

The facility is owned by the Office of Public works and as an improved governance measure introduced in 2017 all outside users must apply for a licence.

Whilst Garda Management are consulted, licences are issued by the OPW for the benefit of the local community on a not for profit or commercial basis.

We Just want to Swim Templemore say they will resume their campaign if there is no progress on allowing access to the pool which has been available to the community since 1965.
