AIB Reverses Plans To End Cash Services For Cashel And Cahir

AIB is abandoning plans to end cash services in four branches in Co. Tipperary along with the other 66 branches across the country.

Earlier this week the Irish bank revealed plans to convert 70 of their branches including Cashel, Cahir, Roscrea and Carrick-On-Suir into cashless facilities.

Critics of the plan included a wide cross section of community, business and farming interests.

Most cited the fact that the change would mean many towns would have no bank and customers would be faced with longer journeys to complete transactions and there would be security risks given the lack of night safe facilities.

The alternative services to be offered by the An Post network were also considered to be inadequate.

The reversal of their earlier decision was made due to the customer and public unease it caused, the bank said in a statement this morning.

AIB will now maintain  its 170-strong branch network in its entirety.

The bank had defended the move saying there had been an increase in the use of digital banking services and a decline in branch visits.

According to the bank, there has been a 35% decline in cash withdrawals from ATMs and a 50% fall in cheque usage over the past five years.
