Minister Eamon Ryan is to bring a memo to cabinet today in respect of measures to make Ireland more energy efficient in the face of rising fuel costs and possible shortages due to the war in Ukraine.

The proposal involves a decision to  charge cars with less than 3 people a fee  to travel on Irish roads.

The Minister says the scheme will be rolled out rapidly in collaboration with An Garda Siochana, Local Authority Staff and will involve the use of Go Safe monitoring vans also.

The RSA is to compile a database and no car will be fined more than twice a day.

Minister Ryan says council staff will record details of cars entering towns and the FCNs will be issued where relevant.

The Minister gave assurances that the scheme is not a revenue raising scheme but is rather intended to encourage a change in driver/car owner behaviour.

Kerry TD Danny Healy Rae says the Minister is abusing his position in the dual portfolios of Transport and Climate Action.

Happy April Fools Day!!
