A proposal from the community and the Management of the Dean Maxwell Nursing Home in Roscrea to develop a dementia specific unit on the site has been approved by the Department of Health.

Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill received an extensive briefing from Minister Mary Butler this morning, where the Minister confirmed that a new dementia and respite unit would be delivered for Roscrea and surrounding areas on a greenfield site.

Deputy Cahill says he is committed to continuing his work with Minister Butler, Cllr Michael Smith, local groups and HSE officials to secure long term beds for this new unit.

The centre has faced an uncertain future as a long term residential nursing home as it needs substantial investment to meet new HIQA regulations and the HSE has committed to opening a new 50 bed long stay unit in Nenagh.

Community groups and public representatives have led a campaign to retain a long term care facility at the Dean Maxwell Home in Roscrea.
