Drivers in the Thurles area are advised that enhancement works at Parnell Street Car park will begin on Monday Feb 14th.

Works will be carried out on a phased basis in order to reduce disruption to the centre of town.

While the car park will remain open throughout the works, parking spaces will be reduced.

The contractor, Rathacabbin Tarmacadam Ltd., have advised that works will be ongoing for a period of approximately 6 weeks.

Once complete, there will be approximately 138 parking spaces available in the carpark, including Electric Vehicle charging spaces and Age Friendly parking, as well as Autism Friendly spaces.

Thurles MD district administrator Sharon Scully says that every effort will be made to minimise disruption and the safety of road users will be a priority.

The new layout for the carpark will see a new location for disabled parking spaces.

The plans show that while there will be 8 disabled spaces in the car park these will be  in two areas – 6 at the centre of the car park near the entrance to Black Castle and 2 adjacent to Baker street.

Updated casual trading by laws for Parnell Street car park means that 30 spaces on the left and right of the vehicular entrance will be available for casual trading.

The payment option for the car park will continue to be pay and display machines and via E-parking. The council expects that the EV charging points will be operational no later than July 2022.

The works also feature a SUDS drainage feature with a rain water garden used to remove pollution from runoff water before it is released to the waste water system.
