One hundred new garda recruits are beginning their training at Templemore Garda training College.
The recruits are the first new members to pass through the college in more than five years because of the recruitment embargo.
Their training also starts against the backdrop of concern among senior garda personnel at the fall of garda numbers to a level below 13,000.
Their is still concern that even with new recruits the force still has insufficient manpower.
