North Tipperary County Councillors have asked the County Manager to discuss with the planning authorities the possibility of changing the current development plan to allow Gardai set up home in areas they have no family connection with.

The request has been made on foot of concerns that many areas are being left with no Garda presence because of cutbacks.

As it stands, there are restrictions on only allowing people with long family connections with certain areas to apply for planning permission.

It was suggested at this month’s meeting of the local authority to allow gardai apply for planning permission in these areas in order to maintain a local Garda presence.

The county manager has agreed to discuss the matter with the planning authorities.
