Cllr Michael Murphy, from Clonmel, has been selected as the Fine Gael Candidate in the next General Election in South Tipperary.
The decision was made at the Selection Convention held in a packed Halla na Feile in Cashel last night.
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke chaired the convention which was also attended by Ireland South FG MEP Sean Kelly.
The other candidate seeking the nomination was Senator Garret Ahearn who ran unsuccessfully in the 2020 General Election when the constituency was a five seater covering all of Tipperary.
As the South Tipperary Constituency will be a three seater for the next election the party is expected to stick with a one candidate strategy however the Fine Gael National Executive will have the final say at election time.
Over four hundred Fine Gael Members participated in a private ballot managed by staff from Fine Gael head office – 246 voting for Cllr Murphy and 214 for Senator Ahearn.
It is expected that the General Election will be held later this year despite the Taoiseach’s commitment that the Government will run it’s full term until late 2025.
Cllr Murphy says he is honored to be selected as the party Candidate for the South Tipperary Constituency. Mr Murphy has been a Councillor since 2009 for the Clonmel area.
