Fine Gael Councillor John Crosse says he is confident that the Post Office service in Tipperary town will be accommodated in the town centre.
An Post is to seek a private contractor to run the services as it wishes to close the current Post Office building in Grattan Street.
Cllr Crosse says he does not support this decision but is seeking a commitment from An Post that they consider the customer base and town centre economy and commit to selecting a new location that is in the town centre.
It is understood that the Tipperary town Revitalisation Task Force is seeking a similar commitment from An Post.
The existing 6 staff at the Post Office will have first option on applying to take over the service in a new premises.
The staff are faced with relocation to another Post Office, applying to transfer to another area of the postal service or redundancy.
Two local landlords have already approached Cllr Crosse to express interest in taking over the service.
Cllr Crosse says having the Post Office in the town centre will help the town but says car parking is an important factor in finding a location.
