There has been an outpouring of sympathy and condolences following the death of a local man in a farming accident near Galbally.

The man has been named locally as Tom Childs from Baunteen.  Mr Childs was working with his tractor at the time of the accident yesterday afternoon.

Mr Childs is understood to have been in his 60s and married with two adult children. In addition, Mr Child’s brother and sisters live locally with an extended family well known and respected in the community.

Cllr Eddie Ryan from the Cappamore Kilmallock Municipal District and Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill who chairs the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee both spoke on Tipp Mid West Radio today offering sympathy to the family and friends of Mr Childs and to the wider Galbally community.

Cllr Ryan says he knew Mr Childs for all of his life and says it is a tragedy that the man lost his life caring for his animals and keeping his farm right. The community is heartbroken according to Cllr Ryan who says neighbours and friends will rally to help the family as they deal with the tragic loss.

Deputy Cahill urged farmers not to forget about safety due to the pressures of work or the weather conditions. Deputy Cahill says the death was a stark reminder to all local farmers of the risks they face daily.

The Health and Safety Authority is to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding Mr Child’s death.   16 farmers are among the 43 workplace fatalities in Ireland in 2023.
