Tipperary Sinn Fein TD Martin Browne is calling on the Government to ban rent increases in the private rental sector as rents continue to increase in the county.

The latest Daft.ie rent report shows rents rising by 13% in Tipperary over the last 12 months.

According to the data from Daft.ie  an average new rental in Tipperary is now costing a €15,360 a year based on a monthly rent of €1,280.   Deputy Browne says this is” totally unaffordable for people on ordinary incomes in Tipperary.”

Nationally rents in the open-market are now 8% higher compared to the same time last year.

The Sinn Fein TD is proposing a ban on rent increases for three years and a tax measure to return  a full month’s rent to every renter through a refundable tax credit.

In addition the Cashel based TD wants the Government to increase and accelerate the delivery of affordable, rental and purchase homes in the county.
