Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene of collision involving a car and pedestrian shortly after 2am on Sunday 8th October 2023 on a local road near Emly.
The pedestrian, a male in his 30s, was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. His injuries are understood to be serious.
The driver of the car, a male in his late teens, was arrested at the scene under the Road Traffic Acts. He has since been charged and released from Garda custody to appear before a sitting of the Courts next month. Garda say their investigation is ongoing.
There have been four fatalities on the roads in separate collisions in Louth, Kerry, Roscommon, and Donegal over the weekend.
The latest death brings to 144 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year.
New figures show that the number of Gardaí involved in roads policing has dropped by more than a third since 2009. That year, 1,046 Gardaí were involved in roads policing, but this year, that figure has fallen to an average of 676.
Peadar Toibin, Aontú Leader, who obtained the figures in a parliamentary question, called for more investment in the recruitment and retention of Gardaí.
