Students in Scoil Mochaomhóg Naofa, Two Mile Borris, Thurles, are the Battery Recycling Champions for the WEEE schools battery recycling competition.   The students collected the equivalent to 40,500 used AA batteries for recycling during the last school year.

The reward for the students is a €2,000 sports voucher.

The competition which has been running for 12 years resulted in the collection of the equivalent of 2 million AA batteries across the country from last October to March 2023. This enabled valuable materials in the batteries to be reused and reduced the amount of waste going to landfill.

The competition begins again on October 2 and will run until the end of March 2024. It is open to all primary and secondary schools which collect at least 10 full 5kg battery boxes in WEEE Ireland battery recycling counties – with prizes for the schools who collect the most.

Interested schools can visit weeeireland.ie for more information on the competition and to order WEEE Ireland Blue Battery boxes.
