Tipperary County Council has submitted a Part 8 Planning Application for a series of measures on the N24 beginning on the eastern side of the Knockagh Roundabout and extending 1.2km towards Clonmel. The measures are to address safety concerns with the current road in this area and also upgrade the road surface. The details of the project are available to view on the council website at Tipperarycoco.ie until June 23rd and submissions can be made until 4.30pm on July 7th. The plans can also be viewed in the council offices in Tipperary town, Clonmel and Nenagh.

The work involves road resurfacing, new footpaths and cycle paths, reducing the carriageway width, relocation some existing safety barriers, adding in new safety barriers, improving the layout of junctions and providing better kerbing and road markings. There are also drainage works included in the proposal to remove surface water from the paved area and landscaping of the surrounding area. The work extends along the N24 from the Knockagh Roundabout to a point 300m east of the junction with Loughlohery Road.  This project is being funded through the TII Pavement Asset Repair and Renewal programme.

Following surveys of the pavement condition, TII identified this section of the N24 as a section of road that requires pavement strengthening and surface rehabilitation. In addition, the site was identified by TII as a High Collision Location following a number of accidents over recent years. The existing road crossfall is inadequate for the existing curve radii. The crossfall, or superelevation, is required to prevent a vehicle travelling at, or below, the Design Speed from experiencing excessive sideways force to enable it to remain on the road. The Proposed Development will provide superelevation for a vehicle travelling at the appropriate speed – this section of the road has a daily vehicle flow of 11,000 of which 880 are Heavy Goods Vehicles.
