Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill has revealed that from September 2023, Thurles will offer a Home Economics teacher training course at St Patrick’s Mary Immaculate Campus. The programme will be delivered as a four-year undergraduate course. Deputy Cahill describes the additional course in Thurles as very positive news for education in Thurles and Tipperary. It is understood that the course will be delivered in collaboration with MIC Thurles and Tipperary ETB. It is expected that students will make use of the facilities in Archerstown National Apprenticeship Training Centre just outside Thurles near Turtulla.
The programme has yet to secure Teaching Council Accreditation which Deputy Cahill is confident can be in place Spring 2023. Deputy Cahill has praised Government Ministers, and the leadership at MIC for their contributions in adding the course to the programme in Thurles. At present those wishing to train as Home Economics Teachers can do so at St Angela’s College in Sligo or in the Munster TU in Cork which also provides a pathway to a Masters in UCC. The Thurles campus currently has almost 600 students participating in it’s teacher training programs in subject areas of Gaeilge, Mathematics, Business Studies, Religious Studies, and Accounting.
