Aontú has expressed support for government actions in the area of sexual assaults but also thinks the problem is underreported and more can be done.

The party has welcomed the recently launched government strategy on Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence and particularly the focus on prevention and on ensuring victims are better supported.

The party has also welcomed the role of the University of Limerick in developing the framework for the operation and training of intermediaries who will help vulnerable people, including sexual abuse victims and children, when giving evidence in the justice system.

Data from An Garda Síochána show that 31 arrests have been made in 2021 in Tipperary in respect of sexual assaults – which the party feels may not be true reflection of the incidence of the crime.

The party is calling for a system to be developed that will make it easier for victims to come forward and report any assaults of this nature and for mandatory specific training for pub and nightclub staff and bouncers.

The party also wants greater public awareness of the services and supports provided by Nenagh and Clonmel offices of the rape crisis centres.
