Data from the Department of Education shows that there were 2,120 primary school classes across the state with 30 pupils or more in the last school year.

In Tipperary, there were 79 classes with 30 pupils or more.

Tipperary TD Martin Browne is calling for investment to improve education facilities and opportunity by reducing class sizes.

The EU average is 20 children per class.

The Cashel based TD is urging the Minister for Education to seek funds to deliver the INTO request for a two point reduction in average class size in a single year.

Deputy Browne says the evidence shows that pupils do better and are better served with smaller class sizes. The action would cost 31 million euros in each of  the next two years and Deputy Browne says children deserve the investment in their education and future.
