UHL Asks Public to Consider Other Care Options Before A&E

495

The Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick is continuing to deal with high numbers of attendance and is asking the public to consider all other care options before attending the emergency department.

People with less urgent complaints are advised to expect long delays at the Emergency Department and are asked to first consider attending injury units, a GP, the out-of-hours GP services or a pharmacist before coming to the emergency department.

Hospital management say that surge capacity has been put in use to manage the “extremely high” levels of activity.

In addition, extra ward rounds, accelerated discharges and identification of patients for transfer to Model 2 hospitals are underway.

The public are reminded that there are three injury units available to those needing care seven days a week.

There are units in Nenagh and Ennis Hospitals and they are open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.

St John’s Injury Unit in Limerick City is also available from 8am to 7pm.

Injury units provide care for broken bones, sprains, burns, wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and foreign bodies in eyes/ear/nose, as well as minor head injuries.

However, such unity do not care for children under 5 years of age.
