Former Detective and Survivor of IRA Shooting to be Laid to Rest Today

The funeral of retired Detective Garda Ben O’Sullivan will take place today (Monday).

Mr O’Sullivan passed away surrounded by his family on Friday in Milford Hospice, Limerick after a short illness.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has offered his condolences to Det. Garda O’Sullivan’s wife, Mary, and their children.

Living in Corbally, Co. Limerick, Mr O’Sullivan miraculously survived being shot 11 times during the IRA gun attack on the Main Street of Adare on June 7th, 1996.

Garda Jerry McCabe died in the shooting.

Det. Garda O’Sullivan was awarded two Gold Scott medals, which is the highest award possible in An Garda Síochána for courage and bravery.

He was also awarded the Freedom of Limerick in 2018.
