Due to major runway upgrades, Cork airport is to close this September for for a period of three months.

The 10-week closure will begin on 10th September, and it is anticipated to reopen on 23rd November, once the works are completed. The plan by airport officials is to provide a service for the summer, and then be in a position to reopen in November, in time for the Christmas period.

The project is expected to cost €30 million, and will be completed in far less time than if the works were carried out while the airport was operating.

The news comes as Cork airport has reported a massive 95% drop in passenger numbers due the effects of Covid-19 travel restrictions.
