Weekend of Commemorative Events in Co Tipp

A number of events are taking place in Co Tipperary this weekend to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Soloheadbeg ambush.

Seminars on the incident and related commentary will be presented at Ballykisteen Hotel from tomorrow morning.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald will be the key speaker at the South Tipperary Republican Commemoration Committee event which assembles at Soloheadbeg Church at 1.30 on Saturday afternoon.

The Soloheadbeg Ambush Centenary Commemoration will take place on Sunday following a Mass of Remembrance at Solohead Church at 11.30am.
The oration will be given by Eamon O Cuiv TD.

A heritage Information Board will also be unveiled at the site on the day.
Traffic and Parking arrangements for that event will see roads into Solohead Cross close from 10am.

Those attending are asked to please park in Tipperary racecourse on the N24 from 10am where free shuttle buses will run to Solohead until the event commences. Shuttle buses will drop you back after the event concludes.

Meanwhile, an Irish Republican Socialist commemorative event run by Saoradh is also being organised for 1pm on Sunday at Coffey’s Forge.

Later in the day the Cahir Social and Historical Society will present a re-enactment of the meeting of the first Dail. That takes place at 3.30pm on Sunday at Cahir Castle.
