Michael D. Higgins has been elected as President of Ireland for a second seven-year term after being elected on the first count nationally.
Higgins received 822,566 (55.6%) first preference votes on the first count considerable far ahead of the other 5 candidates. In Tipperary, 45.5% of the electorate voted for Higgins, a former Labour Party TD, Senator and Minister, followed by almost 37% for businessman and TV celebrity, Peter Casey. Casey made controversial remarks about the Traveller community while campaigning in Co Tipperary.
