Local Gov Should Be Reviewed and Rated

The new Chairperson of the Tipperary Cashel Municipal District has said that he would like to see a review of the new system of local government.

Michael Fitzgerald was speaking about the 2014 abolition of local town councils and their replacement by municipal authorities which cover a larger area.

Ealier this morning former chairman of the Municipal District Roger Kenney noted how funding has reduced since the 2014 changes.

Cllr Fitzgerald concurred with Cllr Kennedy, saying the new system has resulted in fewer local representatives covering each district and less funding being made available for infrastructural projects and local supports.

And while he does not believe that town councils will return, despite what some political parties are suggesting, Cllr Fitzgerald believes the new system of local government should be reviewed and rated to see ‘what is working and what is not’.
