Extracting Water from Lough Derg may be option for supply to Dublin

Extracting water from Lough Derg is involved in two of four options to deal with the inadequate water supply in Dublin.
Of the four options published by Irish Water today, three involve taking water from the Shannon, while the fourth is to build a desalination plant in Fingal, Co Dublin.
Of the three extraction options one includes taking water directly from Lough Derg through a pipeline, with the second through a stored reservoir supply.
Another option includes using a pipeline from the Parteen Basin near Ardnacrusha.
These options will now go out for public consultation until early August.  Irish Water’s aim is to apply for planning permission in 2017.
